MASCOT

Writers: Zander Schaus & David Martinez

Genre: Comedy / Drama

Logline:

A self absorbed theater actor reluctantly takes a job as a mascot’s sidekick for a terrible Triple A baseball team. The man behind the mascot is a booze soaked, degenerate.

Together they become one.

Synopsis:

Ted is a fledgling LA actor waiting to be discovered. His day job; performing in a sea-themed Amusement Park which is slowly dying due to that stupid documentary Blackfish. Now, his hours have been cut, his car has been sold and he can’t seem to close the deal with a pretty girl at work.

Ted’s only joy is his self-indulgent semi-autobiographical one person show where he holds the mirror up to nature -- just like that stupid Blackfish documentary! Problem is, his show isn’t exactly taking Hollywood by storm. Not even North Hollywood.

Ted is restless, aimless and depressed, balding and 40. Ted agrees to take a gig touring the country with a triple A baseball team: The California Hound Dogs.

His job is simple. Dress like a hot dog vendor and endure the abuse of the Hound Dogs Mascot night after night. It pays well. And he gets all the hot dogs you can eat (limit 3).

Regardless of the absurdity of the show Ted is invigorated. And each gig brings with it an exciting and palpable uncertainty, unfortunately he has to deal with his new boss - Theo, being the majority of that uncertainty.

Theo’s passion and commitment make him a joy to perform in front of hundreds, okay, tens of people. Early on Theo’s devil-may-care attitude is too chaotic for Ted. But the rush of every performance pulls the two opposites closer together.

Is there ever a time to give up on a dream? Should we even have one to begin with? Will Ted, a highly trained theater performer, be able to set aside his pretentious tongue twisters, for bail money, Jager shots and occasional fraud? Will Theo be able to finally remove his mask and reveal the real reasons why he hides behind cocaine and booze?

Because of each other.  Because of a chance meeting. Because of a Mascot and his Stooge. At journey’s end we can only hope that Ted and Theo will dig deep enough to finally find true happiness and resolve.
